What We Design
From compact kitchen beds to larger backyard food gardens, each design is planned around you and your goals.
We'll design your vegetable garden for you.
A vegetable garden doesn't need to be a messy patch hidden at the back of the property — it usually ends up that way because the layout was never properly planned.
That's exactly what our design process fixes — we turn "a patch of veggies" into a considered, good-looking space that produces well and works with the way you use your home.
You'll be working directly with Melanie from Lemonleaf Gardens, who plans practical edible gardens for real South African homes.
With the right layout, an edible garden can become one of the most useful and beautiful parts of your garden.
Our Edible Garden Design Service
We design vegetable gardens around your available space, sunlight, soil conditions, water access and the food your family actually enjoys eating. The result is a practical garden that's easier to maintain, easier to harvest and far more productive.
Garden Design Packages
Whether you want advice, a detailed garden plan or a complete installation, Melanie can help you choose the right starting point.
Most projects start with a consultation with Melanie, where you'll talk through your space, budget, goals and what you'd actually like to harvest. From there, you can use the plan to build it yourself, or ask us to quote on installation.
We assess your space, sunlight, access and goals, then give you clear guidance on layout, bed positioning, materials, soil and what to grow before you spend money.
A custom garden plan gives you a practical layout for raised beds, paths, crop ideas, planting direction and trellis placement, designed around sun, access and usability.
We can turn your approved design into a finished edible garden, including raised beds, soil preparation, planting, trellises and the final details that make it work beautifully.
Most vegetable gardens fail because people start by buying plants. The better place to start is sunlight, access, water, bed placement, soil and how the garden will actually be used.
Pricing
Consultations, design plans and installation quotes tailored to your project.
Every garden is different — and costs can change fast once you add raised beds, trellises, compost, irrigation, paving, fruit trees, and labour. That’s why we price in stages based on what your space actually needs (and what you want to take on yourself).
Consultations with Melanie start from R950, with video or in-person options depending on your budget and how much guidance you need. From there, we can keep it simple with rough layout sketches, create a detailed design plan, or quote on a full installation once the space and materials are clear.
Process
From consultation to completed design, here's how we plan your edible garden.
Tell us where you are based, what space you have and what you would like to grow.
Send photos, measurements or a short walkthrough so we can understand sunlight, access, water and layout.
You'll talk through your goals, budget and practical options with Melanie before choosing the best starting point.
We create a clear plan for beds, paths, crops, trellises, soil and irrigation.
Use the plan yourself, or ask us to quote on installation where available.
Ask about seasonal refreshes, follow-up visits and ongoing maintenance for gardens we install.
What to grow
Instead of filling beds with random vegetables, we help you prioritise the herbs, fruit and vegetables your household actually uses most often.
For many Johannesburg homes, the most useful crops are herbs, salad greens, tomatoes, chillies, peppers, beans, peas, spinach, lemons, berries and seasonal vegetables. The exact planting plan depends on the season, sun, space and how much time you can realistically spend maintaining it.
FAQ
A garden consultant helps you make better decisions before you build or plant. For an edible garden, Melanie helps you plan a food garden that’s practical, seasonal, and productive. This includes sunlight, soil, water, layout, crop choices, companion planting, succession planting, and what your household actually wants to harvest.
You may not need one if you already understand your seasons, crop rotation, companion planting, soil needs and where each bed should go. A consultation is useful if you feel unsure, have wasted money on plants before, or want a garden that is easier to plant, water, maintain and harvest.
Yes. A small vegetable garden still benefits from planning, proper placement, bed sizing, soil preparation and crop choices. Vegetable gardening is rewarding, but the last thing you want is to spend money on an area you never use because it becomes too much work or never produces well.
No. A vegetable garden can be a single raised bed, a courtyard herb garden, a patio growing space or a larger garden with paths and trellises.
Yes. You can book a design plan and use it with your own gardener, handyman or installation team.
Yes. Vegetable garden installation is one of the things we specialise in. We can help with raised beds, soil preparation, planting, trellises, climbing supports and the details that turn the plan into a finished edible garden.
Yes. We offer maintenance for vegetable gardens we install, especially where seasonal planting, pruning, soil top-ups, trellis training or general upkeep are needed. Maintenance can be discussed as part of your installation quote.
Your design can include a yearly planting and harvest schedule so you know what to plant, when to refresh beds and what to expect through the seasons. If you need more help, Melanie can also do follow-up visits, seasonal refreshes or ongoing maintenance for gardens we have installed.
Often, yes. It starts with a conversation about what you want to grow, how you use the space and what kind of help you need. Photos, measurements and a video walkthrough are usually enough for early advice or a simple layout discussion. Some projects still benefit from an in-person visit, especially where levels, access, irrigation or installation are involved.
Photos of the space, rough measurements, notes on where the sun falls, your water points, your budget range and a list of crops your household actually uses are all helpful. You do not need a perfect plan before you enquire.
That does not always rule out an edible garden. We can help you work out which areas get the best light and choose crops that suit the conditions. Some herbs, leafy greens and seasonal vegetables can still do well with less sun, while fruiting crops usually need brighter positions.
A home kitchen garden is best for fresh, high-use crops like herbs, greens, tomatoes and chillies. It helps, but it should not be treated as a full grocery replacement. That said, we can also design higher-producing gardens for households aiming to be more self-sufficient. It depends on your goals, space and how much time you can give the garden.
