Minneola Tangelo Tree for Sale
The Minneola Tangelo is one of the most visually distinctive and flavourful citrus varieties you can grow. Developed in the USA in 1931 by crossing a Duncan grapefruit with a Dancy tangerine, it combines the rich, sweet juiciness of a tangerine with a refreshing hint of grapefruit tartness — producing a fruit that is wholly its own, and quite unlike anything else in the citrus world.
Often referred to by its affectionate nickname "Honeybell" — a reference to its distinctive bell-shaped silhouette and the characteristic neck that tapers from the stem — the Minneola is as attractive as it is delicious. The deep orange-red skin peels away easily to reveal very juicy, tender, aromatic flesh that is nearly seedless and packed with sweet, tangy flavour.
The Minneola ripens in winter (June to July in most South African regions), providing a wonderful citrus harvest during a quieter time in the fruit garden. The tree itself is vigorous and large, with beautiful large, pointed leaves and fragrant white flowers in summer — an ornamental asset as well as a productive one.
One important point: the Minneola Tangelo requires cross-pollination from a mandarin-type citrus to produce fruit reliably. A Clementine is the ideal pollinating partner. Plant one nearby and both trees will benefit from the improved fruit set.
Appearance
Produces distinctive bell-shaped fruit with a characteristic neck at the stem end. The thin skin is deep orange-red in colour and peels away easily. The flesh is very juicy, tender and aromatic with a rich, sweet-tart flavour. The fruit is nearly seedless.

June to July — a winter-bearing citrus variety.

Growth Rate
Vigorous, large growing tree with large, pointed leaves. Can reach 4m in height and spread. Produces fragrant white flowers in summer. Can be used as an ornamental shade tree in smaller gardens.
Container Friendly?
Citrus grow exceptionally well in containers. Choose a large pot with excellent drainage, use a bark-based potting mix and position in the warmest, sunniest spot available.
Watering
Keep plants consistently moist but avoid overwatering. Water deeply once a week, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Container-grown trees may need more frequent watering.
Temperature
Frost sensitive — suited to frost-free areas only. Will tolerate light to moderate frost when established and if planted in a sheltered position. Protect young trees from any frost.
Chilling
No chilling requirement. An evergreen citrus tree that fruits without a cold dormancy period. Best in warm, subtropical to mild temperate climates.

The Minneola Tangelo requires cross-pollination to produce fruit. Plant alongside any mandarin-type citrus variety — a Clementine is the ideal companion. A single Minneola tree will produce very little fruit without a cross-pollinator nearby.
Planting & Care Guide
Plant in very well-drained, light, aerated soil — clay soils and waterlogging are fatal to citrus. If planting in a pot, use a good quality bark-based potting mix with added river sand and ensure excellent drainage.
Citrus are heavy feeders. Apply a 6:1:5 fertiliser at monthly intervals throughout the growing season. Supplement regularly with magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts) and iron chelates to prevent yellowing.
Keep plants consistently moist but be careful not to overwater. Monitor for aphids, scale, mealybug and citrus psylla — treat with any product containing imidacloprid.
