Strawberry Plant for Sale

Nothing beats a sun-warmed strawberry picked from your own garden. This plant is ready for a pot, raised bed or dedicated strawberry patch.

Strawberries suit virtually every South African garden with full sun and regular water. They are the most forgiving berry for beginners and one of the best crops for children to help grow and pick.

Assorted nursery cultivar.

Strawberry Plant

Appearance

Bright red, heart-shaped berries on low mounding plants. Sweet, aromatic fruit — best eaten fresh from the plant.

Harvest Time

Spring through early summer; everbearing types may crop again in autumn.

Year to Bear

Fruits in the first season after planting.

Growth Rate

Low, spreading plant with runners. Each plant stays compact — 20–30cm tall.

Container Friendly?

Excellent — ideal for pots, hanging baskets, raised beds and strawberry towers.

Sunlight

Full sun for maximum sweetness.

Watering

Keep evenly moist during flowering and fruiting. Drip irrigation or saucer watering reduces disease.

Temperature

Hardy and widely adapted. Protect open flowers from late frost.

Chilling

Low chilling requirement — grows well across most of SA.

Pollination Info

Self-fertile. One plant produces fruit; a patch of several plants gives bigger harvests.

Planting & Care Guide

Plant in well-drained soil enriched with compost. Berries establish quickly when watered regularly during the first summer.

Feed lightly in spring with a balanced organic fertiliser or pelletised manure — avoid heavy nitrogen, which pushes leaf growth at the expense of fruit.

Mulch to keep roots cool and moist, keeping mulch away from the stem or crown to prevent rot.

Prune according to habit: trailing and hybrid berries need winter tidying and support; bush types benefit from removing old canes after fruiting.
