Punica granatum 'Purple Heart'
R190.00
Sweet-tart, medium-soft seeded
Dark Purple-Red Late Fruit!
Purple Heart (also sold as Sharp Velvet) is a fruiting pomegranate with deep purple-red skin, dark red arils and a sweet flavour with a little tang.
Self-fertile. Compact enough for a large pot or a sunny hedge.
Purple Heart is a fruiting pomegranate selected for flavour and colour: large fruit with deep purple-red skin, dark red arils, medium-soft seeds and a sweet taste with just enough tang. It is the same cultivar often listed as Sharp Velvet. It ripens toward the later end of the pomegranate season, which is useful if you already have an earlier variety such as Molla Nepes.
Growth is manageable — keep it around 3m with pruning, or grow it as a bushy container plant. Full sun, well-drained soil, water while establishing, then it is drought-tolerant. Self-fertile.
Large fruit with deep purple-red to burgundy skin. Arils are dark red, juicy and sweet-tart with medium-soft seeds.
Later than many pomegranates — typically into autumn (around April), depending on climate.
Grafted pomegranate trees typically begin bearing fruit within 1–2 years of planting.
Compact, productive shrub or small tree. Keep under about 3m with pruning; good in a large container or as a hedge.
Pomegranates grow well in large containers. Use a well-drained mix and keep watered through the growing season.
Full sun with good air circulation for best flowering and fruiting.
Water regularly while young. Once established, deep infrequent watering in the fruiting season is enough.
Tolerant of moderate frost once established. Young plants may need protection in colder gardens.
No strict chilling requirement. Deciduous in colder areas; semi-evergreen in mild climates.
Self-fertile. A single tree will produce fruit. Planting two or more pomegranates improves yields.
Plant in well-drained soil in full sun. Pomegranates are extremely drought-tolerant once established and thrive in hot, dry conditions — exactly the conditions that suit much of South Africa.
Water regularly when young and establishing. Once the tree is well-rooted (after the first season), watering can be reduced significantly. Deep, infrequent watering during the fruiting season produces the best quality fruit.
Feed lightly with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Pomegranates do not need heavy fertilisation and will produce reliably in lean soils once established.
Prune in late winter if needed to shape the tree or remove dead and crossing branches. Pomegranates can be maintained as a multi-stemmed shrub or trained to a single trunk.
