The pomegranate is one of the oldest cultivated fruit trees in the world and one of the most versatile ornamental and fruiting plants available to South African gardeners. Beautiful when in flower, striking when in fruit, drought-tolerant once established and adaptable to nearly every South African climate — the pomegranate genuinely earns its place in any garden.

Planting & Care Guide

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Pomegranates dislike wet feet but are remarkably drought-tolerant once established.

Feed monthly with pelletised manure from September to February. Preventative spraying for false codling moth and fruit fly is recommended where these pests are active.

Water consistently through spring and early summer for better yields; reduce watering from late summer but avoid severe drought. Container plants must never dry out completely.
