Hershkovich is a fruiting pomegranate. A quality pomegranate from the Israeli breeding programme — Israel is a world leader in pomegranate research and breeding, and Hershkovich reflects that heritage.

The pomegranate's extraordinary nutritional profile has attracted worldwide attention — the fruit is exceptionally rich in antioxidants, particularly punicalagins and anthocyanins, and pomegranate juice has become one of the most studied and valued health juices in the world.

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Once established, pomegranates are remarkably drought-tolerant and require very little ongoing maintenance — one of the most low-input garden trees available.

Pomegranate Tree - Hershkovich

Appearance

Medium sized, rounded fruit with dark skin. The arils are large, dark red in colour with a more pronounced sour than sweet taste. Soft seeded. One of the earlier-ripening varieties, bearing from early to mid February.

Harvest Time

Early ripening — from approximately early to mid February, depending on local weather conditions.

Year to Bear

Grafted pomegranate trees typically begin bearing fruit within 2–3 years of planting.

Growth Rate

Moderate growing. Can reach 2–5m in height depending on variety and pruning. Very responsive to regular pruning and can be maintained as a compact ornamental shrub.

Container Friendly?

Pomegranates grow well in large containers and can be maintained at a compact size with annual pruning.

Sunlight

Full sun is essential — pomegranates need heat and sunlight to ripen fruit properly.

Watering

Very drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly when young. Deep infrequent watering during fruiting improves fruit quality.

Temperature

Frost-hardy once established. Deciduous — the tree drops its leaves in winter. Very drought-tolerant in summer. Suited to most South African climates.

Chilling

No specific chilling requirement. Pomegranates are adaptable and grow across a wide range of South African climatic conditions.

Pollination Info

Pomegranates are self-fertile. A single tree will produce fruit without a pollinating partner, though planting two or more trees improves yields.

Planting & Care Guide

Plant in well-drained soil in full sun. Pomegranates are extremely drought-tolerant once established and thrive in hot, dry conditions — exactly the conditions that suit much of South Africa.

Water regularly when young and establishing. Once the tree is well-rooted (after the first season), watering can be reduced significantly. Deep, infrequent watering during the fruiting season produces the best quality fruit.

Feed lightly with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Pomegranates do not need heavy fertilisation and will produce reliably in lean soils once established.

Prune in late winter if needed to shape the tree or remove dead and crossing branches. Pomegranates can be maintained as a multi-stemmed shrub or trained to a single trunk.
