Pears are one of the most elegant and rewarding fruit trees in the South African orchard — producing masses of beautiful white blossom in spring, attractive foliage through summer, and generous crops of quality fruit in late summer and autumn. Planting & Care Guide
Plant in well-drained, deep, slightly acidic to neutral soil in a sunny, sheltered position. Pears are less tolerant of drought than apples but dislike waterlogged conditions.
Prune in winter when dormant to shape the tree and remove crossing branches. Pears do not need as hard a pruning as peaches — light to moderate pruning maintains productivity without excessive regrowth.
Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring as growth begins. A high-potassium feed after fruit set improves fruit size and quality.
Thin fruit to one per cluster when pea-sized to achieve larger, better-quality fruit.
