Self-fertile. Needs proper winter chilling.
Sandvliet is a South African peach grown in traditional cold-winter peach districts for sweet yellow dessert fruit. Match it to gardens that receive a proper winter chill — Western Cape interior, Free State and colder Highveld positions are typical.
Self-fertile. Full sun, sharp drainage, hard annual winter pruning and fruit thinning are the keys to quality crops. Grafted trees typically begin bearing within 2–3 years.
Yellow dessert peaches suited to fresh eating — typical freestone / dessert peach character for SA cold-winter orchards.
Summer — timing varies with local climate; generally mid peach season.
Grafted trees typically begin bearing fruit within 2–3 years of planting.
Moderate growing deciduous tree reaching approximately 3–4m. Annual hard winter pruning is essential.
Not recommended for long-term container growing.
Full sun is essential — at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Water consistently during the growing season. Reduce watering as fruit approaches harvest.
Deciduous and frost-hardy once established. Needs sufficient winter chill.
Requires proper winter chilling — not suited to warm subtropical winters.
Self-fertile. A single tree will produce fruit without a pollinating partner.
Plant in well-drained, loamy soil in full sun. Stone fruit dislike waterlogged roots and will decline rapidly in poorly drained conditions.
Prune hard every year in late winter (June–July) while dormant. Hard annual pruning is the single most important maintenance step — it controls tree size, promotes vigorous new fruiting wood and prevents the tree from becoming overgrown and unproductive.
Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring as new growth emerges. A second application of high-potassium fertiliser after fruit set improves fruit size and sugar content. Avoid over-fertilising with nitrogen, which encourages excessive leafy growth.
Thin fruit to a single fruit every 15–20cm along each branch when fruit is marble-sized. Thinning dramatically improves fruit size and quality and prevents branch breakage under heavy crops.
