Catherina is a popular South African peach grown for reliable crops of medium to large fruit with yellow-orange skin, a sunny red blush and sweet, juicy, aromatic flesh. It is a dependable mid to late summer dessert peach for gardens that receive sufficient winter chilling (commonly cited around 600–900 hours below 7°C).
Self-fertile. Plant in full sun with excellent drainage, prune hard every winter, and thin fruit for size. Grafted trees typically begin bearing within 2–3 years.
Medium to large peaches with yellow-orange skin, red sun blush and sweet, juicy yellow flesh.
Mid to late summer depending on climate and season.
Grafted trees typically begin bearing fruit within 2–3 years of planting.
Moderate growing deciduous tree reaching approximately 3–4m. Annual hard winter pruning is essential.
Not recommended for long-term container growing.
Full sun is essential — at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Water consistently during the growing season. Reduce watering as fruit approaches harvest.
Deciduous and frost-hardy once established. Needs sufficient winter chill.
Moderate chilling requirement (commonly ~600–900 hours below 7°C). Not for warm-winter subtropical gardens.
Self-fertile. A single tree will produce fruit without a pollinating partner.
Plant in well-drained, loamy soil in full sun. Stone fruit dislike waterlogged roots and will decline rapidly in poorly drained conditions.
Prune hard every year in late winter (June–July) while dormant. Hard annual pruning is the single most important maintenance step — it controls tree size, promotes vigorous new fruiting wood and prevents the tree from becoming overgrown and unproductive.
Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring as new growth emerges. A second application of high-potassium fertiliser after fruit set improves fruit size and sugar content. Avoid over-fertilising with nitrogen, which encourages excessive leafy growth.
Thin fruit to a single fruit every 15–20cm along each branch when fruit is marble-sized. Thinning dramatically improves fruit size and quality and prevents branch breakage under heavy crops.
