Perfect Variety for Growing in Pots!
The Tainung No.2 Dwarf Papaya is an important commercial variety prized for its excellent fruit quality, outstanding shelf life and adaptable, compact growing habit. A GMO-free variety with proven results.
Self-pollinating — one plant produces fruit without a companion.
The Tainung No.2 Dwarf Papaya is one of the most well-established commercial papaya varieties in the world — a heavy-bearing, compact grower with consistently excellent fruit quality and outstanding post-harvest shelf life. Whether you are growing it for the kitchen garden, a warm patio container, or the smallholding, this variety delivers reliably.
The fruit is large to oblong in shape, with smooth skin that turns a beautiful golden yellow to orange when fully ripe. Inside, the flesh is dark orange-red with a tender, juicy texture, a naturally sweet flavour and a wonderful, fragrant tropical aroma. The Tainung No.2 has notably better shelf life than many other papaya varieties — an important consideration if you have more fruit than you can eat at once.
Like the Red Lady, this is a hermaphrodite variety — it carries both male and female flowers on the same plant and will produce fruit without needing a second tree. It is a GMO-free cultivar, making it a popular choice for those who prefer to grow clean, unmodified fruit varieties.
Papayas are strictly warm-climate plants, requiring frost-free conditions and plenty of heat to produce fruit. They are best suited to the subtropical regions of KwaZulu-Natal, the Mpumalanga lowveld and Limpopo, where warm summers and mild winters provide the conditions they need to thrive.
