The Red Lady Dwarf Papaya is one of the most commercially successful papaya varieties in the world and a favourite among home gardeners in subtropical South Africa. Compact, prolific and early-bearing, it delivers large, impressive fruit in a plant small enough to grow in a container or compact garden space — making it accessible to a far wider range of growers than the towering standard papaya types.

The fruit is one of the Red Lady's strongest selling points. It is large, with smooth skin that shifts from green to yellowish-green as it ripens. But the real attraction is inside: a thick, deeply red flesh that is rich, juicy and intensely sweet with a smooth, tropical flavour that is hard to beat fresh from the tree. Fruit are borne in clusters along the full length of the trunk, from surprisingly close to the ground upwards, making harvesting easy and rewarding.

The Red Lady is a hermaphrodite variety — it carries both male and female flowers on the same plant — meaning a single plant will pollinate itself and produce fruit without requiring a second tree nearby. First fruit can appear in as little as nine months from planting in warm, subtropical conditions, making this one of the fastest-producing fruit plants available.

Papayas are strictly warm-climate plants and require frost-free conditions, good heat and consistent moisture to thrive. They are best suited to KwaZulu-Natal, the Mpumalanga lowveld and Limpopo.
