The Bitter Seville Orange is not a sweet eating orange. It is the famous marmalade orange: sharp, bitter, aromatic and packed with the citrus character that gives proper marmalade its depth.

The fruit is usually round to slightly flattened with a textured orange rind, fragrant peel and acidic, bitter juice. It is excellent for marmalade, preserves, chutneys, sauces, marinades, bitters, liqueurs and recipes where a sweet orange would taste too flat.

Seville orange trees are attractive evergreen citrus trees with glossy leaves and fragrant white blossoms. They can be more cold-tolerant than some sweet oranges once established, but young trees still need frost protection in colder gardens.

Bitter Seville is self-fertile, so one tree can produce fruit on its own. It is a good choice for gardeners who cook, preserve or want a citrus tree with a more traditional culinary use.
