Citrus sinensis 'Bahianinha'
R350.00
Early Seedless Navel Orange!
Bahianinha is a Brazilian navel orange selection — seedless, sweet, earlier than many Washington navels, and well suited to warm gardens.
Self-fertile. Excellent fresh-eating orange.
Bahianinha is a Brazilian selection of the Bahia / Washington navel group — prized for seedless, sweet, easy-peel navel oranges that often ripen earlier than standard Washington navels in warm climates. Fruit has the classic navel "button" at the blossom end and rich, juicy flesh for fresh eating.
Navel oranges are self-fertile and among the most rewarding citrus for the home garden. Give Bahianinha full sun, sharp drainage and regular citrus feeding. Protect young trees from frost.
A fine choice if you want sweet winter oranges without the seeds of many seedling oranges.
Medium seedless navel oranges with bright orange rind, classic navel button and sweet, juicy flesh for fresh eating.
Early to mid-winter in warm South African gardens — often ahead of later Washington navel types.
Grafted trees can produce fruit in the first year of planting!
Moderate evergreen citrus, typically managed at 3–4m with pruning.
Citrus grow exceptionally well in containers. Choose a large pot with excellent drainage, use a bark-based potting mix and position in the warmest, sunniest spot available.
Best production in full sun, but tolerates semi-shade. Aim for at least 6 hours of direct sun daily.
Keep plants consistently moist but avoid overwatering. Water deeply once a week, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Container-grown trees may need more frequent watering.
Young trees need frost protection. Best fruit quality in warm, sunny, frost-sheltered positions.
No chilling requirement.
Self-fertile. A single tree will produce seedless navel oranges without a pollinating partner.
Plant in very well-drained, light, aerated soil — clay soils and waterlogging are fatal to citrus. If planting in a pot, use a good quality bark-based potting mix with added river sand and ensure excellent drainage.
Citrus are heavy feeders. Apply a 6:1:5 fertiliser at monthly intervals throughout the growing season. Supplement regularly with magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts) and iron chelates to prevent yellowing.
Keep plants consistently moist but be careful not to overwater. Monitor for aphids, scale, mealybug and citrus psylla — treat with any product containing imidacloprid.
