Mayglo is a low-chilling nectarine variety that produces well in warmer South African gardens where high-chilling stone fruit fail. An early-season variety with smooth, blushed red skin and sweet, juicy flesh.

The nectarine is simply a smooth-skinned peach — and the Mayglo is one of the best nectarine varieties for South African home gardeners who live in warmer areas that cannot support the high-chilling stone fruit varieties traditionally associated with the Western Cape and the Free State.
With a low chilling requirement, Mayglo sets blossoms and fruit reliably in the warmer parts of Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape coastal regions — areas where many other stone fruit varieties produce disappointing crops because the winters simply are not cold enough to satisfy their dormancy requirements.
The fruit is medium-sized and attractive: smooth, blushed red over yellow-green skin, firm and juicy flesh with the clean, sweet, slightly tangy flavour that makes nectarines so popular as a fresh eating and lunchbox fruit. It is an early-season variety, producing from late October into November — one of the first stone fruit harvests of the season.
Like all stone fruit, Mayglo needs full sun, well-drained soil and an annual hard winter prune to remain productive. Grafted trees begin bearing within 2–3 years of planting.
Appearance
Medium-sized, attractive fruit with smooth, blushed red over yellow-green skin. The flesh is firm, sweet and juicy with the characteristic smooth (non-fuzzy) nectarine skin that distinguishes it from peaches.

Early season — ripens from late October to November.

Grafted trees typically begin bearing fruit within 2–3 years of planting.
Growth Rate
Moderate growing deciduous tree reaching approximately 3–4m. Prune annually in winter to maintain size and productivity.
Container Friendly?
Not recommended for long-term container growing — stone fruit are vigorous trees that perform best planted in the ground where their root systems can develop fully.
Watering
Water consistently during the growing season. Deep, infrequent watering is better than frequent shallow irrigation. Reduce watering as the fruit approaches harvest to concentrate sugars. Do not water during winter dormancy unless the soil is very dry.
Temperature
Deciduous and frost-hardy once established. Low chilling requirement makes this variety suitable for warmer areas where high-chilling stone fruit fail to produce reliably.
Chilling
Low chilling requirement. Suitable for warmer areas including Limpopo, Mpumalanga lowveld, warmer Gauteng positions and the Western Cape coastal areas. Not suited to the coldest highveld or Free State conditions.
Pollination Info
Nectarines are generally self-fertile. A single tree will produce fruit without a pollinating partner, though cross-pollination can improve yields.
Planting & Care Guide
Plant in well-drained, loamy soil in full sun. Stone fruit dislike waterlogged roots and will decline rapidly in poorly drained conditions.
Prune hard every year in late winter (June–July) while dormant. Hard annual pruning is the single most important maintenance step — it controls tree size, promotes vigorous new fruiting wood and prevents the tree from becoming overgrown and unproductive.
Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring as new growth emerges. A second application of high-potassium fertiliser after fruit set improves fruit size and sugar content. Avoid over-fertilising with nitrogen, which encourages excessive leafy growth.
Thin fruit to a single fruit every 15–20cm along each branch when fruit is marble-sized. Thinning dramatically improves fruit size and quality and prevents branch breakage under heavy crops.
