The Clementine is one of the most popular easy-peel mandarin-type citrus in the world — sweet, juicy, aromatic and conveniently sized for lunchboxes and fresh eating. Fruit peels cleanly, segments separate well, and seediness stays low when the tree is grown without heavy cross-pollination from other mandarins.
In South African gardens Clementines ripen through the cooler months, bringing bright winter colour and flavour when many other fruit trees are quiet. Self-fertile and productive with standard citrus care: drainage, feeding, sun and frost protection for young trees.
Also an excellent pollination partner for Minneola tangelo and other mandarin-types that need a companion.
Appearance
Small to medium bright orange easy-peel fruit with sweet, juicy segments. Seed count is usually low when grown without nearby pollenisers.

Early to mid-winter in most South African growing areas — typically from May onwards depending on climate.

Growth Rate
Moderate, upright to rounded evergreen citrus. Typically managed at 2.5–4m with pruning.
Container Friendly?
Citrus grow exceptionally well in containers. Choose a large pot with excellent drainage, use a bark-based potting mix and position in the warmest, sunniest spot available.
Watering
Keep plants consistently moist but avoid overwatering. Water deeply once a week, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Container-grown trees may need more frequent watering.
Temperature
Young trees need frost protection. Established Clementines cope with light frost in sheltered positions but prefer mild winters.
Chilling
No chilling requirement.
Pollination Info
Self-fertile. A single tree will produce fruit. Note that nearby mandarin-type pollenisers can increase seediness.
Planting & Care Guide
Plant in very well-drained, light, aerated soil — clay soils and waterlogging are fatal to citrus. If planting in a pot, use a good quality bark-based potting mix with added river sand and ensure excellent drainage.
Citrus are heavy feeders. Apply a 6:1:5 fertiliser at monthly intervals throughout the growing season. Supplement regularly with magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts) and iron chelates to prevent yellowing.
Keep plants consistently moist but be careful not to overwater. Monitor for aphids, scale, mealybug and citrus psylla — treat with any product containing imidacloprid.
