The Tommy Atkins Mango Tree is a vigorous, large evergreen tree with beautiful, dense, glossy foliage that makes it an excellent shade tree as well as a productive fruit tree. The spectacular red and green fruit against the dark green leaves is a stunning sight in the summer garden.

Tommy Atkins Mango Trees thrive in the warm, frost-free subtropical areas of South Africa, including Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and the warmer parts of the Northern Cape and North West.
Appearance
Large, oval mango with an attractive, deep red skin with green areas, turning fully red when ripe. The flesh is deep orange-yellow, sweet and flavourful with some fibre. Good shelf life and excellent eating quality. Medium-sized seed.
Harvest Time
Mid-season harvest – November to January, depending on location and local weather conditions.

These are grafted trees so they can produce fruit within 3–5 years of planting, and often sooner!
Growth Rate
Moderate to fast growing. Can reach 10m or more if left unpruned. Best pruned to 4–5m for easy harvesting in a home garden.
Container Friendly?
Young Tommy Atkins Mango Trees can be grown in large containers with regular pruning to control size, though they prefer to be in the ground for best production.
Watering
Deep watering once a week during the growing and fruiting season. Reduce watering during winter (May to August) to allow the tree its necessary dry, cool rest period to encourage flowering.
Temperature
Frost sensitive – requires warm, frost-free conditions. Best suited to the warmer subtropical and tropical areas of South Africa. Young trees must be protected from frost.
Chilling
Requires a dry, slightly cooler period in winter (June to August) to stimulate flowering and fruit production. Reduce watering during this period.

Tommy Atkins Mango Trees are self-fertile and a single tree will produce good crops of fruit. Planting more than one variety of mango tree nearby will encourage cross-pollination by insects and can improve fruit yields.
Planting & Care Guide
Plant in deep, well-drained soil enriched with compost in a warm, sunny, frost-free location. Mango trees will not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
Feed with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season. Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding in winter as this promotes vegetative growth rather than flowering. Prune after harvest to maintain a manageable tree size.
