Joa Mango Tree for Sale

The mango is the king of tropical fruit — and with good reason. No other fruit combines such an extraordinary depth of sweetness, aroma and flavour in such an abundance of flesh. In the right South African subtropical garden, a well-established mango tree becomes one of the most rewarding fruit trees you can grow: beautiful, productive, evergreen and generous.

The Joa Mango is a quality variety suited to South African subtropical conditions, producing attractive fruit with good flavour and reliable cropping in warm, frost-free environments. Like all mangoes, it is an evergreen tree with the characteristic long, glossy leaves that give the canopy its beautiful, tropical character — making it as much an ornamental shade tree as a productive fruit tree.

Mangoes are grafted trees that can begin producing fruit within 2–4 years of planting. They are self-fertile, so a single tree will give you a harvest. For best production, plant in deep, well-drained soil in full sun with excellent heat and no frost risk. Reduce irrigation before and during flowering to concentrate the tree's energy into setting fruit — this is the most important management step in getting a good mango harvest.

Mangoes are strictly subtropical and are only suited to warm, frost-free regions: Limpopo, the Mpumalanga lowveld and the KwaZulu-Natal coast are the main suitable growing areas. In these regions, they are one of the finest and most rewarding fruit trees you can plant.

Mango Tree - Joa

Appearance

An attractive, compact to medium-sized evergreen mango tree with the distinctive long, glossy, deep green leaves typical of the mango family. Produces quality mango fruit with attractive skin and good, sweet flesh.

Harvest Time

Mangoes ripen from December through to March in most South African subtropical regions, depending on local conditions.

Year to Bear

Grafted mango trees can produce fruit within 2–4 years of planting. Trees are self-fertile and do not require a pollinating partner.

Growth Rate

Compact to moderate growing. Mango trees can ultimately reach 5m or more if left unpruned, but respond well to pruning for size control. The dense, attractive evergreen canopy makes mangoes excellent shade trees.

Container Friendly?

Mangoes can be grown in very large containers with regular pruning to manage size. Position in the warmest, most sheltered spot available and ensure excellent drainage.

Sunlight

Full sun is essential. Mangoes need heat and sunlight for good fruit set and ripening. A warm, sheltered position is ideal.

Watering

Water regularly when young and establishing. Once established, mangoes are relatively drought-tolerant. Reduce watering during the dry pre-flowering period to encourage good flower bud development.

Temperature

Strictly subtropical. Frost-sensitive — any frost will damage young trees and kill established fruit. Only suited to frost-free growing areas in South Africa.

Chilling

No chilling requirement. Mangoes are tropical to subtropical trees that thrive in warm conditions year-round.

Pollination Info

Mango trees are self-fertile. A single tree will produce fruit without needing a pollinating partner, though cross-pollination by insects improves fruit set and yield.

Planting & Care Guide

Plant in deep, well-drained soil in a warm, sunny, frost-free position. Feed regularly with a balanced fertiliser. Reduce irrigation before and during flowering to concentrate fruit set. Prune lightly after harvest to maintain shape and size. Mangoes need hot summers and warm, dry winters for best production.
