The Heidi Mango Tree is a popular South African commercial mango variety producing sweet, completely fibreless mangoes with a beautiful red and yellow skin.

Heidi Mango Tree for Sale

The Heidi Mango is one of South Africa's most popular commercial mango varieties and is perfectly suited to home garden cultivation. It produces medium-sized, attractively coloured mangoes with a beautiful red and golden-yellow skin and exceptionally sweet, rich, fibreless flesh that melts in the mouth.

Growing your own Heidi Mango Tree is one of the most rewarding things a South African gardener can do. Fresh mangoes picked directly from your own tree at peak ripeness have a depth of flavour and sweetness that supermarket mangoes simply cannot replicate.

The Heidi Mango Tree is a large, beautiful evergreen tree with glossy dark green leaves and attractive clusters of small flowers in spring. The vibrant, colourful fruit that follows is one of the most spectacular sights in the summer garden.

Our Heidi Mango Trees for sale are grafted onto suitable rootstock, ensuring earlier fruiting, consistent fruit quality, and a true-to-type variety every time.

Mango trees thrive in the warm, subtropical and tropical regions of South Africa, particularly Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the warmer parts of the Northern Cape. They require warm, frost-free conditions and do best with a dry, slightly cooler period in winter to stimulate flowering.

Mango Tree - Heidi

Appearance

Medium-sized, oval to round mango with an attractive, vibrant red and golden-yellow skin. The flesh is deep orange-yellow, very sweet, smooth and completely fibreless with a rich, complex flavour. The seed is small relative to the flesh.

Harvest Time

Summer harvest – typically December to February, depending on location and local weather conditions.

Year to Bear

These are grafted trees so they can produce fruit within 3–5 years of planting, and often sooner!

Growth Rate

Moderate to fast growing. Can reach 8–10m if left unpruned. Best pruned to 4–5m for easy harvesting in a home garden setting.

Container Friendly?

Young Heidi Mango Trees can be grown in large containers and kept pruned to a manageable size, though they prefer to be planted in the ground for best fruit production.

Sunlight

The Heidi Mango Tree requires full sun – at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day. A warm, north-facing, frost-free position is ideal.

Watering

Deep watering once a week during the growing season (summer). Reduce watering significantly during winter (May to August) as a drier, slightly cooler period is needed to stimulate flowering. Over-watering in winter can prevent flowering.

Temperature

Frost sensitive – mango trees require warm, frost-free conditions. Young trees must be protected from any frost. Best suited to frost-free subtropical and tropical regions of South Africa.

Chilling

Requires a dry, slightly cooler period in winter (June to August) to stimulate flowering and fruit set. Reduce watering during this period.

Pollination Info

Mango trees are self-fertile and will produce fruit without a pollinating partner. However, planting more than one tree in the garden will encourage cross-pollination by bees and other insects, which can improve fruit set and yields.

Planting & Care Guide

Plant in deep, well-drained soil in a warm, frost-free, sunny position. Mango trees do not tolerate waterlogging so good drainage is essential.

Feed with a balanced fruit tree fertiliser during the growing season (September to March). Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding in winter as this can reduce flowering. Prune after harvest (February to April) to maintain the tree at a manageable size.
