SA's Favourite Macadamia!
Beaumont is South Africa's most widely planted macadamia — a reliable, high-yielding cultivar with rich, buttery nuts in a hard shell.
Evergreen tree for warm, frost-free to light-frost gardens; excellent as a long-term nut crop and shade tree.
Macadamia integrifolia × tetraphylla 'Beaumont' is the workhorse macadamia of South African orchards and home gardens. It produces clusters of hard-shelled nuts with creamy, high-oil kernels — excellent roasted, in baking, or eaten fresh once cracked.
Plant in full sun in deep, well-drained soil. Macadamias dislike waterlogging and heavy frost when young. Water regularly while establishing; mature trees are moderately drought-tolerant. Feed in spring and mid-summer with a balanced fertiliser suited to nut trees.
Beaumont is largely self-fertile, though a second macadamia cultivar nearby can improve nut set. Expect first meaningful crops several years after planting as the tree establishes.
Evergreen canopy with glossy leaves; clusters of round hard-shelled nuts with creamy white kernels high in oil.
Nuts typically mature from late summer into autumn; harvest when husks split or nuts drop, depending on climate.
Grafted trees usually begin cropping within 3–5 years of planting, with heavier yields as the canopy fills out.
Medium to large evergreen tree — allow space for a full canopy (often 5–8m+ in the ground over time).
Young trees can start in large containers, but Beaumont is best planted in the ground for a productive nut crop.
Full sun for best flowering and nut set. Shelter from strong wind when young.
Keep evenly moist while establishing. Avoid waterlogging. Mature trees need deep watering in dry spells, especially during nut fill.
Best in warm, subtropical to mild temperate areas. Protect young trees from hard frost.
No winter chilling requirement like deciduous fruit; cool dry weather can help flower set in some regions.
Beaumont is largely self-fertile. A second macadamia cultivar nearby can improve pollination and nut set.
Plant in full sun in deep, well-drained soil. Dig a wide hole, set the graft union above soil level, and water in thoroughly. Mulch the root zone, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Feed in spring and mid-summer. Prune lightly to shape when young; avoid heavy cuts on mature productive wood.
