The Mauritius Litchi Tree is the variety most South Africans know and love. It is the most widely planted commercial litchi variety in the country and produces large, reliable crops of sweet, fragrant, juicy litchis that are absolutely delicious eaten fresh straight from the tree.
Growing your own Mauritius Litchi Tree is a wonderful investment for your garden. Litchis are one of the most expensive fruits to buy in the supermarket, yet a well-established litchi tree will produce hundreds of fruits per season, saving you a significant amount of money while providing you with the freshest, most flavourful fruit possible.
The Mauritius Litchi Tree is a beautiful, large, evergreen tree with glossy dark green leaves that provide excellent shade. In season, the tree is covered with large, pendulous clusters of bright red fruit that are as visually spectacular as they are delicious. The fragrant blossoms that precede the fruit are also very attractive.

The Mauritius Litchi Tree thrives in the warm, subtropical regions of South Africa – particularly KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and the warm areas of Mpumalanga. It requires a period of cool, dry weather in winter to stimulate flowering and fruiting.
Appearance
Medium to large, round litchi covered in distinctive, rough, bright red skin. The translucent white flesh is thick, sweet, very juicy and aromatic with a small seed. One of the finest-flavoured litchi varieties available.
Harvest Time
Harvest season is typically December to January – depending on location and local weather conditions.
Year to Bear
These are grafted trees so they can produce fruit within 3–5 years of planting, and often sooner!
Growth Rate
Moderate growing. Can reach 10–12m if left unpruned. Best pruned to 5–6m for easier harvesting in a home garden.
Container Friendly?
Young litchi trees can be grown in containers but prefer to be planted in the ground for best fruit production, as they become large trees over time.
Watering
Regular, deep watering during the growing season, especially during flowering and fruit set. Water deeply once a week and reduce watering significantly during winter to encourage flowering.
Temperature
Best suited to warm to hot, frost-free subtropical regions. Young trees are frost sensitive and must be protected. Established trees can tolerate brief, mild frosts but prolonged cold will damage the tree.
Chilling
Requires a cool, dry period in winter (approximately 100–200 hours below 15°C) to stimulate flowering. This is naturally provided in most of the major litchi-growing regions of South Africa.
Pollination Info
Litchi trees are self-fertile but will produce significantly better yields when multiple trees are planted together, allowing cross-pollination by bees and other insects.
Planting & Care Guide
Plant in deep, well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5) enriched with compost. Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered position protected from strong winds.
Water and fertilise regularly during the growing season. Avoid over-fertilising with nitrogen, which promotes leafy growth at the expense of fruit. Pruning is minimal – remove dead, damaged or crossing branches after harvest.
