The Meyer Lemon (Citrus × meyeri) is a Chinese hybrid believed to be a cross between a true lemon and a mandarin or orange. It is the lemon most home gardeners fall in love with: rounder fruit, thinner skin, abundant juice and a sweeter, less biting acidity with a soft floral citrus perfume.
Meyer trees are naturally more compact and less thorny than Lisbon or Eureka, which makes them ideal for smaller gardens and large containers. Self-fertile — one tree is enough for a generous household supply.
Fruit colours from green through yellow-orange when fully ripe. Use Meyer lemons for dressings, baking, drinks and anywhere you want lemon flavour without harsh bite. Protect young trees from frost; established plants are among the more cold-tolerant citrus in the home garden.
Appearance
Rounder, thinner-skinned lemons that ripen yellow to soft orange-yellow. Flesh is very juicy with milder acidity and a sweet citrus perfume compared with Eureka or Lisbon.
Harvest Time
Main crop through winter, with fruit often present for long periods once the tree is established.
Year to Bear
Grafted trees can produce fruit in the first year of planting!
Growth Rate
More compact and less thorny than Lisbon or Eureka. Typically 2–3.5m with light pruning. Excellent container subject.
Container Friendly?
Citrus grow exceptionally well in containers. Choose a large pot with excellent drainage, use a bark-based potting mix and position in the warmest, sunniest spot available.
Watering
Keep plants consistently moist but avoid overwatering. Water deeply once a week, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Container-grown trees may need more frequent watering.
Temperature
One of the more cold-tolerant lemons once established, but young trees still need frost protection in colder gardens.
Chilling
No chilling requirement.
Pollination Info
Self-fertile. A single tree will produce an abundant harvest without needing a pollinating partner.
Planting & Care Guide
Plant in very well-drained, light, aerated soil — clay soils and waterlogging are fatal to citrus. If planting in a pot, use a good quality bark-based potting mix with added river sand and ensure excellent drainage.
Citrus are heavy feeders. Apply a 6:1:5 fertiliser at monthly intervals throughout the growing season. Supplement regularly with magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts) and iron chelates to prevent yellowing.
Keep plants consistently moist but be careful not to overwater. Monitor for aphids, scale, mealybug and citrus psylla — treat with any product containing imidacloprid.
