Limoneira Lemon Tree for Sale

The Limoneira Lemon was developed in California in 1940, using the reliable Lisbon lemon as a parent, and it has built a reputation as one of the most consistent, productive lemon varieties available to home gardeners. Where the Eureka has its merits, the Limoneira stands out for its prolific, near-year-round bearing habit and its lower seed count — making it a favourite for those who use a lot of lemons in the kitchen.

The fruit is very similar to the Lisbon — oval and elongated with a prominent nipple — and the flesh is very juicy, highly acidic and wonderfully aromatic. The Limoneira bears heavily and consistently, with fruit present on the tree for most of the year and a concentrated main crop from April through to July. The tree itself is a strong, vigorous grower with fewer thorns than most lemon varieties, making harvesting more pleasant.

Like all citrus, the Limoneira thrives in full sun with excellent soil drainage and regular fertilisation. It grows beautifully in containers and is a practical choice for gardens with limited space. Highly adaptable and very easy to maintain, this is a lemon tree that will more than earn its place in any South African garden.

Lemon Tree - Limoneira

Appearance

Produces oval, elongated lemons with a prominent nipple. The rind is slightly textured and turns bright yellow when mature. The flesh is very juicy and acidic with few seeds and a strong, pleasant citrus aroma. Very similar in appearance to the Lisbon variety.

Harvest Time

Fruit present throughout the year. Main crop from April to July.

Year to Bear

Grafted trees can produce fruit in the first year of planting!

Growth Rate

Strong, vigorous grower. Can reach 4–5m if left unpruned. Has fewer thorns than most other lemon varieties. Responds well to pruning for size control.

Container Friendly?

Citrus grow exceptionally well in containers. Choose a large pot with excellent drainage, use a bark-based potting mix and position in the warmest, sunniest spot available.

Sunlight

Best production in full sun, but tolerates semi-shade. Aim for at least 6 hours of direct sun daily.

Watering

Keep plants consistently moist but avoid overwatering. Water deeply once a week, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Container-grown trees may need more frequent watering.

Temperature

Lemons tolerate more frost than most citrus varieties once established. Young trees will still need frost protection. Best in a warm, sheltered position.

Chilling

No chilling requirement. An evergreen tree that produces fruit without a cold dormancy period and grows reliably across most South African regions.

Pollination Info

Lemon trees are self-fertile and do not require a pollinating partner. One tree will produce a prolific crop on its own.

Planting & Care Guide

Plant in very well-drained, light, aerated soil — clay soils and waterlogging are fatal to citrus. If planting in a pot, use a good quality bark-based potting mix with added river sand and ensure excellent drainage.

Citrus are heavy feeders. Apply a 6:1:5 fertiliser at monthly intervals throughout the growing season. Supplement regularly with magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts) and iron chelates to prevent yellowing.

Keep plants consistently moist but be careful not to overwater. Monitor for aphids, scale, mealybug and citrus psylla — treat with any product containing imidacloprid.
