Citrus limon 'Eureka Pink Variegated'
R390.00
The most unique citrus tree on the market
Pollination
Self-pollinating
A rare variegated form of the classic Eureka lemon, grown for its cream-and-green foliage, striped young fruit and naturally pink flesh. Self-fertile, productive and beautiful enough for a patio pot.
The Pink Variegated Eureka Lemon Tree gives you the usefulness of a proper lemon tree with the look of an ornamental citrus. It is a sport of the classic Eureka lemon, but with variegated green-and-cream leaves, striped young fruit and pink flesh when the lemons are fully mature.
This is not a sweet lemon. The flavour is still sharp, aromatic and properly lemony, so you can use the juice and zest in cooking, drinks, baking, marinades and salad dressings. The pink flesh makes it especially lovely for homemade lemonade, cocktails, desserts and garnish where you want something a little more unusual than a standard yellow lemon.
The tree itself is the real showpiece. New growth can flush softly pink, the leaves are splashed with cream and green, and the developing fruit starts with pale green striping before ripening towards yellow. The stripes fade as the fruit matures, but the tree stays attractive even when it is not carrying a heavy crop.
Pink Variegated Eureka is usually a little less vigorous than a normal Eureka, which makes it a good choice for smaller gardens, courtyards and large containers. Plant it where it gets full sun, warmth and good drainage, and protect young trees from frost.
Our Pink Variegated Eureka Lemon Trees are supplied in 18cm pots and are grafted onto citrus rootstock. Grafted citrus trees establish faster and fruit sooner than seed-grown trees, while keeping the special variegated and pink-fleshed character of the variety.
A decorative evergreen citrus with cream-and-green variegated foliage, pink-tinged new growth and fragrant white blossoms. The young fruit is striped green and cream, ripening towards yellow with pink flesh inside.
Bears through much of the year in warm, frost-protected areas, with stronger crops usually from late autumn through spring. Fruit can take 6-9 months to mature after flowering.
These are grafted trees, so they can produce fruit in the first year of planting if they are mature enough and growing well.
Moderate growth rate and generally a little less vigorous than a standard Eureka lemon. Can reach about 2.5-4m if left unpruned, but responds well to light shaping and container growing.
Excellent container choice. Use a large pot with drainage holes, a quality citrus mix and regular feeding. Move to a bigger pot as the tree grows.
Full sun is best. Aim for at least 6-8 hours of direct sun daily. Variegated leaves need strong light to keep the tree healthy and productive.
Water deeply and consistently, then allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly before watering again. Avoid soggy soil. Container-grown trees may need more frequent watering in hot weather.
Frost sensitive. Plant in a warm, sheltered position and protect young trees from frost, cold wind and prolonged winter cold.
No winter chilling required. Pink Variegated Eureka is an evergreen citrus that flowers and fruits without a cold dormancy period.
Pink Variegated Eureka Lemon Trees are self-fertile and do not need another citrus tree for pollination. A single tree can produce fruit on its own, although bees and other pollinators can improve fruit set.
Plant in well-drained soil enriched with compost in a sunny, sheltered position. Citrus does not like cold, waterlogged roots, so drainage is essential. Feed with a citrus fertiliser from spring to autumn, and include micronutrients such as iron, magnesium and zinc if leaves yellow. Prune lightly in spring to shape the tree and remove dead or crossing branches. Remove any shoots from below the graft union.
