Ester Granadilla for Sale

The Ester Granadilla is not just any passion fruit vine — it is a South African success story. This hybrid cultivar was discovered in 1995 by Mr. J.C. Esterhuysen on his farm near Polokwane in Limpopo Province, subsequently patented, and has since built a strong reputation as one of the most reliable, productive and high-quality granadilla cultivars available to South African home gardeners and commercial growers alike.

What sets the Ester apart from standard seed-grown granadilla plants is its consistency. This cultivar produces quality fruit more evenly throughout the year, comes into production faster, and delivers higher yields than most other varieties. The fruit itself is classic granadilla — round, green when young, turning deep purple and wrinkled when fully ripe, with intensely flavoured, fragrant, sweet-tart yellowish pulp surrounding many small, edible black seeds. The taste is unmistakably passion fruit: rich, tropical and complex.

As a garden plant, the Ester is a vigorous climber that decorates its support structure with some of the most intricate and beautiful flowers in the plant world. Passion flowers are a genuine ornamental attraction, and the vine will cover a fence, trellis or pergola with impressive speed.

For best results, plant in full sun in warm, frost-free conditions with a strong support structure in place. Feed regularly during the growing season and prune hard after the main crop to stimulate the following season's growth.

Grenadilla Plant - Ester

Appearance

A vigorous, climbing perennial vine that produces round fruit. The skin starts green and turns deep purple and wrinkled when fully ripe. The yellowish pulp is juicy, fragrant and intensely flavoured with a classic sweet-tart passion fruit taste. The fruit contains many small, round, edible black seeds. The vine produces stunning, intricate passion flower blooms.

Harvest Time

Throughout summer with peak production in summer-autumn. The Ester cultivar bears more evenly throughout the year than most seed-grown varieties.

Year to Bear

A fast-bearing climber — expect first fruit within the first summer season after planting in the right conditions.

Growth Rate

Vigorous, fast-growing climbing vine. Needs a sturdy trellis, fence or pergola for support. Can reach several metres in length within a single season. The vine produces spectacular ornamental flowers as well as edible fruit.

Container Friendly?

Can be grown in a large container with a suitable trellis or climbing frame for support. Position in full sun in the warmest available spot.

Sunlight

Full sun is required for best fruit production. The vine needs heat and sunlight to flower and set fruit reliably.

Watering

Water consistently throughout the growing season. Keep the root zone moist but well-drained. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.

Temperature

Prefers subtropical, frost-free conditions. Young plants are frost-sensitive. Established vines may recover from light frost if the root system is undamaged, but fruit production will be affected.

Chilling

No chilling requirement. A warm-season climber that produces fruit in response to warm temperatures and long summer days.

Pollination Info

The Ester hybrid comes into production quicker and gives higher yields than most other cultivars. While most passion fruit vines are self-fertile, cross-pollination from insects improves fruit set significantly.

Planting & Care Guide

Plant in well-drained, composted soil in full sun. Install a strong trellis or support structure before planting. Feed monthly with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season. Prune heavily after the main fruiting season to encourage vigorous new growth and the following season's fruit.
