Figs are one of the most ancient and rewarding fruit trees in cultivation, thriving in warm, dry conditions with minimal care once established. They grow well across most of South Africa and are particularly well-suited to the hot, dry interior and the Western Cape's Mediterranean-type climate.
A fig tree is an asset in any garden — beautiful and spreading when in leaf, sculptural and interesting when bare in winter, and generously productive when given a warm, sunny spot. Container-growing is also a popular and effective option, particularly for varieties that are smaller in stature.
Tolerant of moderate frosts. A widely adaptable variety that grows well across most of South Africa. The tree responds well to a warm, sheltered position and excellent soil drainage.

Container Friendly?
Figs perform very well in large containers. Pot culture can actually improve fruit production by restricting root growth and concentrating the plant's energy into fruiting.
Watering
Water regularly but avoid overwatering. Figs prefer conditions on the drier side. In winter, reduce watering significantly as the tree goes dormant. Container-grown figs will need more frequent watering than those in the ground.

Chilling
No chilling requirement. Figs are warm-season deciduous trees that do not require cold winters to set fruit.

Figs are self-fertile and do not require a pollinating partner. All commercially available fig trees will produce fruit from a single tree.
Planting & Care Guide
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil — figs dislike wet feet and will not tolerate waterlogging. Avoid rich, overly fertilised soils as this encourages excessive leafy growth at the expense of fruit. They grow very well in containers.
Figs need very little feeding. A light application of pelletised manure in spring is usually sufficient. Too much nitrogen produces large, soft fruit that splits easily.
Prune lightly in winter when dormant to shape the tree and remove dead or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning as figs bear fruit on old and new wood.
Water consistently but sparingly — allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, especially in winter. In containers, reduce watering significantly in winter when the tree is dormant.
