Sunlight
Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. Full sun produces the best fruit set and yield. A sheltered position in cooler areas helps the fruit to ripen properly.

A Beautiful Ornamental AND Edible Tree!
The Feijoa — also called the Fruit Salad Tree — is a strikingly beautiful evergreen with aromatic, unusual fruit that tastes like a blend of pineapple, guava, mint and grenadilla. Ornamental, productive and surprisingly frost-hardy.
If you want a fruit tree that is as beautiful as it is unusual, the Feijoa — sometimes called the Fruit Salad Tree — is hard to beat. Native to South America, this compact, silvery-leaved evergreen produces some of the most aromatic and distinctive-tasting fruit of any tree you can grow in South Africa.
The fruit is oval, green-skinned, and deceptively unassuming on the outside — but crack it open and scoop out the white, seed-filled flesh and you are treated to a flavour that is genuinely extraordinary: a complex, aromatic blend of pineapple, guava, fresh mint and grenadilla that is unlike anything else in the fruit world. The fruit can be eaten raw, scooped straight from the skin, or used in smoothies, chutneys, jams and desserts.
The tree itself is a garden asset long before the fruit appears. In spring it produces striking flowers — white petals surrounding a bold cluster of red stamens — that are edible and often used as a garnish or in salads. The grey-green upper leaf surface and silvery-white underside give the tree a beautiful, two-toned appearance in the breeze.
Feijoas are tougher than they look. Once established, they handle frost remarkably well for a subtropical-fruiting tree, making them a viable choice for gardens that would normally rule out the more tender exotics. They are easy to shape and maintain, respond well to pruning, and can even be planted as a hedge or screen.
A beautiful, compact evergreen tree or large shrub. The leaves are oval, grey-green above and silvery-white below. Striking red and white flowers with prominent red stamens appear in spring and are themselves edible. The fruit is oval to round, dark green on the outside with white, juicy, seed-filled flesh. The flavour is an extraordinary blend of pineapple, guava, mint and grenadilla.
February to March. The fruit does not change colour when ripe — the best indicator is when it falls from the tree naturally.
Feijoas grown from seed take approximately 3 years to begin producing fruit. Grafted specimens will bear sooner.
Moderate growing. Can reach 4m or more in height and spread if unpruned. Very easy to shape and maintain at a smaller size with regular pruning. Makes an excellent hedge or screen when planted in a row.
Feijoas grow well in large containers and can be maintained at a smaller size with regular pruning, making them suitable for patios and smaller outdoor spaces.
Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. Full sun produces the best fruit set and yield. A sheltered position in cooler areas helps the fruit to ripen properly.
Water regularly but allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Feijoas are reasonably drought-tolerant once established but benefit from consistent moisture during flowering and fruit development.
Feijoas are notably frost-tolerant for a subtropical-fruiting tree. Once established, they can handle significant frost events. Young plants will need frost protection.
No formal chilling requirement. Feijoas are evergreen and do not require a cold dormancy period to set fruit. They grow and fruit reliably across a wide range of South African climates.
Feijoas produce more and better fruit when cross-pollinated. For the best results, plant two or more trees of different varieties or seedlings together. Single trees will still produce some fruit.
Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic soil in full sun. Feijoas tolerate a range of soils and are easy to establish. Prune after harvest to shape the tree and encourage strong new growth. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring.
