Self-Pollinating
Late Self-Fertile Sweet Cherry!
Pollination
Self-fertile. Plant with Stella for a longer harvest and better set.
Sweetheart is a late-season Canadian sweet cherry: large, firm, heart-shaped dark-red fruit with excellent flavour and a long picking window.
Self-fertile — one tree will crop. A Stella nearby improves set. Needs a cold winter.
Sweetheart is the late cherry many home growers want once Stella has finished. Bred in Summerland, Canada, from Van × Newstar, it produces large, firm, heart-shaped fruit with dark red skin, pink-red flesh and a sweet flavour (often 19–23°Brix). It stores well after picking.
In South Africa it is a high-chill variety (around 800–1,000 hours). It belongs in cold, high-altitude gardens — Ceres and the Western Cape highlands, the eastern Free State, cool Mpumalanga — not in hot, humid or low-chill suburbs. Harvest is typically the third week of December, about two to three weeks after Bing, stretching the cherry season into early January in some sites.
It is self-fertile and a useful pollen donor for other sweet cherries. Plant with Stella if you want a longer harvest from two trees. Feed monthly with pelletised manure and 6:1:5 in the growing season. Keep the soil evenly moist from flowering through fruit swell.
Large heart-shaped cherries with dark red to crimson skin, pink-red firm flesh and a sweet flavour. Medium to long stems. Good storage after picking.
Late season — typically the third week of December in South Africa, about 18 days after Bing, depending on climate.
Grafted trees can produce fruit within 2–3 years of planting.
Spreading, vigorous sweet cherry. Medium to large if unpruned; keep around 4–6m with winter pruning.
Can be grown in a large container with regular pruning, but crops better in the ground in a cold site.
Full sun — at least 6–8 hours. Choose a sheltered spot with good air flow.
Keep evenly moist through flowering and fruit swell. Water deeply. Ease off after harvest.
Needs cold winters. Frost-hardy when dormant. Spring frost at bloom can damage the crop.
High chill — roughly 800–1,000 hours below 7°C. Not suited to warm, low-chill gardens.
Self-fertile. One tree will fruit. Stella nearby improves yield. Sweetheart is also a useful pollen donor for other sweet cherries.
Plant in deep, well-drained, slightly acidic loamy soil (pH 5.5–6.5) with compost worked in. Full sun and a cold winter are non-negotiable.
Feed monthly with pelletised manure and 6:1:5 fertiliser in the growing season. Prune in late winter to keep an open, spreading canopy — Sweetheart can over-set if left unpruned.
Birds love ripe cherries; net the tree as fruit colours.
