Cherry trees are deciduous and produce stunning white spring blossom before the cherries appear in summer. They are attractive ornamental trees that also reward you with delicious fruit.
Cherry trees require a period of winter cold (chilling hours) to produce fruit, making them best suited to the cooler, higher-altitude regions of South Africa – the Cape Winelands, the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, and the cooler parts of the Highveld.
Appearance
Large, round, dark red to mahogany-coloured sweet cherry with smooth, glossy skin and firm, juicy flesh. Excellent sweet flavour and a very attractive appearance. Good shelf life.
Harvest Time
Summer harvest – November to December in the Southern Hemisphere.
Year to Bear
These are grafted trees so they can produce fruit within 2–3 years of planting!
Growth Rate
Moderate growing. Can reach 4–6m if left unpruned. Responds well to pruning and can be kept to a manageable size.
Container Friendly?
Cherry trees can be grown in large containers with regular pruning to control size, though they prefer to be planted in the ground for best fruit production.
Watering
Regular, deep watering is important, especially during flowering and fruit development. Water deeply once a week and reduce watering after harvest.
Temperature
Hardy and frost tolerant to approximately −15°C. Requires cold winters with sufficient chilling hours to produce fruit. Best suited to the cooler regions of South Africa.
Chilling
Moderate chilling requirement – approximately 500–700 hours below 7°C. Lapins is a lower-chill sweet cherry, but is still best suited to the cooler, higher-altitude regions of South Africa.
Pollination Info
Lapins cherry is self-fertile, meaning a single tree will produce fruit without needing a pollinating partner. However, planting more than one cherry tree nearby will improve fruit set and yields further. Bees are the primary pollinators.
Planting & Care Guide
Plant in well-drained, fertile, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0–7.0) in a sunny, sheltered position. Add compost to the planting hole to improve soil quality.
Annual winter pruning is important to maintain an open canopy, remove dead or crossing branches, and encourage fruiting wood. Protect ripening cherries from birds with netting.
