Superior Improved Cultivar!
The Asdia Banana is a superior improved cultivar developed by Du Roi Laboratories in Limpopo, South Africa. It outperforms the popular Williams variety with a shorter growing cycle, more manageable bunch sizes and excellent disease resistance.
If you are growing bananas for the first time — or upgrading from a standard variety — the Asdia Banana is well worth considering. Developed by the renowned Du Roi Laboratories in Limpopo, South Africa, this improved cultivar was specifically bred to outperform the Williams Cavendish on several key characteristics.
The Asdia is a giant banana variety that produces generous bunches of long-fingered, golden fruit with the same sweet, crowd-pleasing flavour you would expect from a top Cavendish-type banana. What sets it apart is its shorter growing cycle — the Asdia can reach harvest roughly one to two months sooner than a Williams plant — and its slightly more compact, manageable size, making it easier to harvest without a ladder.
The bunches are well-formed, with good finger length and uniform shape, and the plant shows excellent adaptability to varied soil and climate conditions, along with good resistance to the dreaded "choke throat" disorder caused by low temperatures. Young plants display attractive purple-tinged leaves that fade to deep green with age, adding an ornamental appeal alongside the edible harvest.
Bananas are heavy feeders and prefer consistently moist, well-drained loamy soil in a warm, wind-sheltered position. In the right spot, they are surprisingly low-maintenance and rewarding — and once the first bunch is harvested, the plant's suckers can be used to start new plants for free.
Produces large, well-formed bunches of fruit with long, straight fingers. The skin turns golden yellow when fully ripe and may develop characteristic brownish freckles. The flesh is sweet, creamy and delicious. Young leaves display distinctive purple markings that fade as the plant matures.
Approximately 10–12 months from planting to first harvest in subtropical conditions — about 1–2 months faster than the standard Williams cultivar.
Banana plants typically produce their first bunch approximately 10–12 months after planting in subtropical conditions. Container-grown plants may take a little longer.
Fast growing. Reaches approximately 3m in height and spread. Produces suckers (pups) around the base which can be removed and replanted.
Bananas grow well in large containers. Choose the largest pot possible, ensure excellent drainage, and position in the warmest, most sheltered spot available.
Full sun is essential — bananas need at least 6–8 hours of direct sun daily. Plant in the warmest, most sheltered position available, away from cold winds.
Bananas are water-hungry plants and the soil should be kept consistently moist, especially during the growing and fruiting season. Water deeply and regularly. Do not allow the plant to dry out, but also ensure drainage is good as waterlogging is harmful.
Best suited to subtropical regions. Will tolerate very light, brief frost once established and can recover quickly from mild frost damage in spring. Protect young plants from any frost. The pseudostem may die back in cold conditions, but the rhizome usually survives and re-shoots in spring.
No chilling requirement. Bananas are tropical to subtropical plants that thrive in warm, frost-free conditions year-round.
Bananas do not require pollination to produce fruit. They reproduce vegetatively via suckers (pups) that grow from the base of the plant.
Plant in rich, well-drained loamy soil in a warm, sheltered, full-sun position. Bananas are heavy feeders — apply pelletised manure and a 3:1:5 fertiliser monthly. Stake the plant when the bunch begins to develop to prevent the heavy weight from toppling it. After harvesting, cut the fruiting stem down to a healthy young sucker to continue the cycle.
