Persea americana 'Zutano'
R420.00
Type B Avocado.
Pollination
Plant with a Type A variety (Hass or Pinkerton) for best results on all your avocado trees.
Self-pollinating, but the Zutano is a 'B' type avocado and works best when planted alongside an 'A' variety for optimal fruit set.
Excellent pollinator for Hass and Pinkerton avocado trees — and produces a wonderful crop of its own.
The Zutano Avocado Tree is one of the most versatile additions to a home orchard. A vigorous, upright grower with attractive, glossy foliage, the Zutano produces a generous crop of pear-shaped avocados while simultaneously acting as a superb pollinating partner for the popular Hass and Pinkerton varieties. If you already have either of those trees in your garden, a Zutano will noticeably increase fruit set across all your avocados.
Developed in the United States from a Mexican-race seedling, the Zutano is one of the more cold-tolerant avocado varieties available, making it a reliable choice for gardens in cooler subtropical regions where other varieties may struggle. It is also an earlier bearer, often beginning to fruit sooner than expected.
The fruit is medium to large and pear-shaped with smooth, shiny, yellow-green skin that stays green when ripe — a useful reminder that skin colour alone is not a reliable indicator of ripeness. The flesh is pale green, mild in flavour and slightly lighter in texture than richer, oilier varieties like the Hass. This subtler flavour makes Zutano avocados particularly versatile in the kitchen — wonderful sliced fresh into salads, blended into cold soups, or used in lighter dressings and dips.
Ripening through the winter months in most South African regions (June to August), the Zutano fills an important gap in the harvest calendar. Combine it with a Hass or Pinkerton and you can enjoy home-grown avocados across almost the entire year.
Our Zutano Avocado Trees are grafted from proven stock, ensuring a far quicker start to fruiting than seed-grown trees. For full care information, visit our Avocado Tree Care Guide.
Medium to large, pear-shaped fruit with smooth, shiny yellow-green skin that remains green when fully ripe. The flesh is pale green, mild and slightly lighter in texture and oil content than varieties such as Hass. The pip is medium-sized and the skin peels relatively easily.
Ripens June to August — one of the later-season varieties, extending the avocado harvest well into winter.
These are grafted trees so they can produce fruit in the first year of planting!
Fast Growth Rate. Upright, vigorous grower. Can reach a height of 8–10m if left unpruned. The tall, columnar habit makes it well-suited for use as a windbreak or screen in conjunction with other trees.
Yes but find an area that receives at least 4 to 6 hours of direct afternoon sunlight daily.
Sunny spot that gets between 4–8 hours of direct sun daily.
A thorough watering once weekly is generally all your avocado needs. While the roots prefer to stay on the dry side, avocado leaves love humidity. Avoid wetting the trunk and lower stem when watering, and never allow the roots to sit in waterlogged soil.
Generally a hardy tree down to around 0°C, and slightly more cold-tolerant than most other avocado varieties. Young plants will still need some protection from frost until they are well established.
No winter chilling required. The Zutano Avocado is an evergreen subtropical tree that fruits without a cold dormancy period. It is among the more cold-tolerant of the common avocado varieties, making it suitable for gardens that experience occasional cool winters.
All avocado tree varieties are either A or B type, but the difference lies in the pollination. To encourage a successful harvest and to give your avocados optimal development, it is best if at least one of these trees are planted nearby as well.
The Type B avocado female flower part will open at the same time as a Type A male flower on the other tree; this more than doubles your chance for successful pollination and fruit-set!
The Zutano Avocado Tree is a Type B Avocado. It is self-pollinating but yields far more prolifically when planted alongside a Type A variety. Plant with a Hass or Pinkerton Avocado Tree for a dramatically improved harvest on all trees.
Avocado Trees boast a no-fuss maintenance, but proper care prepares them for an abundant life. Your tropical fruit will need frequent, deep waterings once a week, with enough time between waterings to let the soil dry out a bit.
Also, avoid fertilizing trees their first year, because fertilizer can burn the roots and cause damage.
