The Granny Smith Apple Tree is one of the world's most recognisable apple varieties, prized for its refreshing tart flavour and vibrant bright green skin.
The Granny Smith Apple Tree is one of the world's best-loved apple varieties and is instantly recognisable by its striking bright green skin. Originally discovered in Australia in the 1860s by Maria Ann Smith, this classic variety has stood the test of time and remains a firm favourite in gardens and kitchens around the world.
Granny Smith apples are known for their refreshingly tart, crisp flavour and firm texture, making them perfect for eating fresh, baking, juicing, and adding to salads. The firmness of the flesh means they hold their shape beautifully when cooked, making them one of the top choices for pies, tarts and cobblers.
Our Granny Smith Apple Trees for sale are grafted, which means they begin producing fruit much sooner than seed-grown trees and are more reliable and consistent in their fruit production.
The Granny Smith Apple Tree is a deciduous tree that produces beautiful white spring blossoms before the fruit appears. It is a vigorous, strong-growing tree that responds well to annual pruning, making it suitable for gardens of all sizes.
Apple trees thrive in areas with cold winters, which provides the necessary chilling hours for the tree to set fruit. The Granny Smith requires a high number of chilling hours, making it best suited to the cooler, higher-altitude regions of South Africa such as the Cape Winelands, the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, and parts of the Highveld.
Large, round apple with smooth, waxy, bright green skin that remains green even when fully ripe. The flesh is crisp, firm and creamy-white with a refreshingly tart, acidic flavour.
Late season harvest – March to May in the Southern Hemisphere.
These are grafted trees so they can produce fruit within 2–3 years of planting!
Moderate to fast growing. Can reach 3–5m if left unpruned. Responds well to pruning and can be kept to a manageable size.
Apple trees can be grown in large containers with regular pruning to control size.
Full sun is essential – at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day for best fruit production.
Regular, deep watering is important, especially during fruit development in summer. Water deeply once a week and adjust according to rainfall and temperature.
Hardy and frost tolerant to approximately −15°C. Requires cold winters with sufficient chilling hours to produce fruit.
Low to moderate chilling requirement – approximately 400 hours below 7°C. Granny Smith is an adaptable, relatively low-chill apple that fruits well across most South African apple-growing regions, including warmer areas.
Apple trees require cross-pollination from a compatible variety to produce fruit. Granny Smith pollinates well with Golden Delicious, Fuji or Gala apple trees. Plant at least two compatible varieties for best results.
Plant in well-drained, fertile, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0–7.0). Choose a sunny, sheltered position. Dig a generous planting hole and add compost to improve soil quality.
Annual winter pruning is essential to maintain an open structure, remove dead or crossing branches, and encourage fruiting spurs. Feed in early spring with a balanced fruit tree fertiliser.
