How mulching works

When organic material covers the soil surface, several things happen simultaneously:

Reduced evaporation. Soil loses water primarily through the surface. A physical barrier interrupts this process. At 75 mm depth, evaporation from a vegetable bed can drop by 50–70% compared to bare soil.

The best mulching materials in SA

Organic mulches (recommended)

Wood chips and bark: The most long-lasting organic mulch. Breaks down slowly, so a single application lasts twelve to twenty-four months. Excellent under fruit trees, established shrubs, and along garden paths. Can be bought in bags from nurseries and hardware stores, or sourced in bulk from tree-felling companies. Kiln-dried or composted wood chips are best — fresh green chips can temporarily tie up soil nitrogen as they decompose.

Straw: Clean wheat or oat straw is ideal for vegetable gardens. Lightweight, easy to apply, breaks down in a season and improves soil. Cocoa hulls, pine bark, sugarcane mulch: Available bagged from larger nurseries. All effective; the choice depends on cost and availability in your area.

Inorganic mulches (situational use)

Gravel and pebbles: Long-lasting and effective at reducing evaporation. Good for pathways, around Mediterranean plants, and in rocky garden styles. Doesn't add anything to the soil and traps wind-blown debris over time. Not ideal for vegetable beds.

Black plastic sheeting: Used commercially in strawberry production and market gardens. Highly effective at moisture retention and weed suppression. Limits rainfall infiltration, doesn't improve soil, and degrades and fragments over time. Acceptable for short-season use under specific crops; not recommended for long-term general use.

Shade cloth and hessian: Useful as a temporary mulch for new plantings and to protect tender plants. Hessian degrades and adds to the soil — a genuine advantage over plastic.

How to apply mulch correctly

Step 1: Weed the area first

Mulch doesn't kill established weeds — it covers them and they grow through. Pull or hoe all weeds before applying. This is the step most people skip, and then wonder why weeds push through their mulch.

Step 2: Water the soil if it's dry

Mulching dry soil locks in the dryness. In summer rainfall regions in May, the soil should still have residual moisture from summer rains. If it feels dry, water deeply before applying mulch.

Step 3: Apply at the right depth

  • Vegetable beds: 50–75 mm
  • Established fruit trees and shrubs: 75–100 mm

Where municipal water restrictions limit irrigation frequency, mulching becomes an important tool for stretching each session. It makes sense to think about it alongside greywater reuse:

Shower and bath water (greywater) can legally be used for garden irrigation in most South African municipalities, provided it doesn't contain strong chemicals or bleach. Greywater should be applied directly to the soil surface, not through drip systems (which can clog), and the mulch layer helps buffer the salts and detergents in it by filtering through organic material before it reaches feeder roots. Rotate greywater application around the garden rather than concentrating it in one spot.

Bucket-flushing water from dishwashing (not strong detergent) and rinsing water are similarly usable on garden beds. Mulched beds tolerate this much better than bare soil, which is quickly affected by soap residue.

Common mistakes

  • Applying mulch too thinly. Less than 50 mm does little. At 20–30 mm it compresses within weeks and provides minimal benefit.
  • Mounding mulch against tree trunks. This is the mulch volcano problem — a mound of mulch against the trunk invites collar rot and bark decay. Keep the base clear.
  • Mulching over dry soil. Locks in the dryness. Water first.
  • Using fresh lawn clippings in thick layers. They mat into an anaerobic, slimy barrier. Apply thinly, or mix with drier material, or compost them first.
  • Not weeding before mulching. Established weeds grow straight through. The benefit of mulch is preventing new weed seed germination — it doesn't suppress existing plants.
  • Forgetting to top up. Mulch that's compressed to 20 mm isn't doing its job anymore. Keep it thick.

What to do this week

  • Walk your garden and identify all beds, fruit trees, and shrubs that are currently unmulched or thinly mulched.
  • Collect autumn leaves (shred them with a mower before applying) or source a bag of wood chips, straw, or lucerne from your local nursery or co-op.
  • Pull all weeds from beds before mulching.
  • Water any beds that are dry before applying mulch.
  • Apply 75 mm of mulch under all fruit trees, extending out to the drip line, with a 15–20 cm clear gap at the trunk.

FAQ

Can mulch attract termites? Organic mulch does create habitat that some termite species may explore. In areas with known termite pressure (particularly the KZN coast, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga), avoid using wood chip mulch directly against wooden structures. Keep mulch clear of wooden fence posts, timber raised bed edging, and timber structures. On soil away from timber, the risk to the garden itself is low — termites contribute to organic matter decomposition and are not typically a problem in mulched garden beds.

Does mulch attract snails and slugs? Organic mulch does provide cool, damp hiding spots that snails and slugs use during the day. This is a real trade-off. Mitigate it by not mulching right up to low-growing vegetables (leave a clear strip around the base), by checking under mulch in the evening and removing molluscs by hand, and by using iron phosphate bait (Ferramol or similar products registered in SA) which is safe for pets, birds, and soil organisms. The water-saving benefits of mulch generally outweigh the snail risk, especially in drier inland regions.

How long before wood chip mulch decomposes? Wood chips typically last twelve to twenty-four months before needing replacement, depending on particle size, climate, and organic activity in the soil. Finer chips decompose faster. Top up when depth drops below 50 mm.

Is it worth buying compost as mulch when it's expensive? Compost is most valuable dug into the soil, not used purely as mulch. For mulching large areas economically, straw or wood chips give better coverage per rand. Use compost as a soil amendment and choose a cheaper material for surface mulch.
